Belgian YP-section visits the Port of Ghent
On Friday 29 October, all PIANC YP's of Belgium were invited by the Ghent Port Company for a most interesting visit. It should be remembered that the Port of Ghent is very well represented in PIANC, with the deputy general manager Peter Mortier being the President of the Belgian National Section and Koen Lamers and Els Bonte as very active members. The meeting took place on board the "Jacob van Artevelde", where a general introduction was given on the history of the port. "The Friendly Port", as the port of Ghent is called, has become a full seaport but needs an improvement of nautical access for its future development.
Two ongoing projects were presented in depth. A new dock called "Kluizendok" is currently being built. The project includes 4.200 m. quay walls (3 phases), dredging of some 15 million m³ of material, and the re-routing of a railway connection. Construction of a new building for the Port Management was presented as an example of sustainable construction, offering an attractive atmosphere to all staff.
After a pleasant lunch, an afternoon tour was made in the port, which included a visit of the Kluizendok site. Finally, it will be remembered as a petite histoire that some YP's extended the visit by paying tribute to some local pubs, where by coincidence they even bumped into "the best goalkeeper in the world." In the opinion of many participants, this was surely an initiative to follow on.

And yet another YP Award
At the initiative of the Young Professionals management, ExCom has decided to award three prizes for outstanding paper presentations at the 4-yearly PIANC Congresses. Three prizes of respectively € 1.000, € 500 and € 250 will be granted for both a paper and the presentation. The awards will be presented during the closing banquet, for the first time during the 32nd Congress in Estoril, Portugal. By organizing a "Young Professionals Paper Award", it is hoped to make the Congresses more attractive and to give an additional incentive to young PIANC members.
This is the second PIANC-award that is specifically targeting Young Professionals. Outstanding technical articles can already be presented for the "De Paepe-Willems Award", which is exclusively reserved for PIANC members of less than 35 years of age. The winner of the "De Paepe-Willems Award 2004" will receive the award (and be invited) at the Charleston AGA in May. Candidates for the 2005 "De Paepe Willems Award" must deliver their article by 31-10, and are advised to learn more on the conditions, the prize and the privileges at http://www.pianc-aipcn.org, Awards
