Upon review, all applications satisfied the minimum eligibility requirements.
The information presented in the applications was judged in accordance with the selection criteria previously prepared. After due deliberations, the Recreational Navigation Commission unanimously voted to make the 2002 Jack Nichol Award to the Cabrillo Marina, because it best exemplified the qualities of marina design, the Award was intended to encourage, including:
Functionality: the marina has tranquil mooring basins with easy access to popular boating waters, it has a good site plan with convenient access to boaters services on land such as parkings, restrooms, clubs, restaurants, etc., it provides a full array of utility services at each berth and uses a stable and durable floating dock system with convenient access from land and water.
Aesthetics: the architectural treatment of the marina buildings and urban design of the entire marina complex including landscaping is pleasing and well suited to the geographic location; the marina complex has already received several major awards for architectural/master plan/landscape merit that recognise the contribution of the overall project tot the betterment of the community.
Environmental: the marina has incorporated several measures to protect water quality and controlled public environmental improvements including a tidal salt marsh with a nature program.
The facility is special because it not only caters to boaters needs for wet berths (usually the larger boats), it also includes boat launch ramp to meet the needs of boaters with smaller boats. The facility has helped transform the former underutiliged maritime area into a magnet for new uses of which the marina is the keystone and this Jack Nichol Award recognises the marinas contribution.
The design team consisted of: Santina and Thompson, Inc. Civil/Structural Engineers; EDAW, Inc. Planning and Landscape Architecture; Woodward-Clyde Consultants Inc. Geotechnical Engineers; Mullen and Associates, Electrical Engineers; and Jenkins, Gales, Martinez, Inc. Architects.
